Public Outreach is our Passion

The faculty, staff, and students of the Geological Sciences (or GSCI for short) Department understand that the next generation of scientists are currently students, not only in college, but in K-12 schools. We also appreciate that it is important to pay back the general public for their hard earned tax dollars that fund research grants as well as CCSU overall, and their general support for science and science education in our country. To serve both ends we conduct many free public science events here, many through the Copernican Observatory and Planetarium.

Did you know that your school or community group can schedule a FREE planetarium show or observing session? Our planetarium seats about 90 and we can handle dozens of  people at a time using our rooftop observatory and a variety of portable telescopes. We also offer two FREE public planetarium shows each month, on the first and third Saturdays (except when it falls on New Year’s eve or Christmas Eve/Day) at 8 PM. There is telescopic observing after each of those shows, weather permitting. We also open up for special astronomical events, such as the recent lunar eclipse. Consult our webpage (http://web.ccsu.edu/astronomy) for more information on upcoming events or scheduling a special show or observing session for your group. We can schedule special shows for groups at flexible days/times at the discretion of staff availability. ALL OUR PROGRAMMING IS FREE and open to the general public!

In addition to the Observatory and Planetarium, our faculty regularly conduct public outreach, and are available to speak to libraries, schools, Scout troops, or other groups. For more information on available geology speakers, contact the department Chairman, Dr. Mark Evans, at Evansmaa@ccsu.edu. For astronomy talks, contact Dr. Kristine Larsen, at Larsen@ccsu.edu.

Our students are also involved in serving the community. For example, on Saturday, October 17, the Geology and Planetary Science (GPS) Club will be celebrating national Earth Science Day with FREE activities from 11 AM to 4 PM here in Copernicus Hall. A schedule will be posted on this blog as we get closer to the event. You can also keep up to date with our department’s activities through our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ccsugeology .

The universe is yours to explore, and the GSCI Department at CCSU wants to help YOU understand the world around you. Let us know how we can be of help to you in your personal quest to reach for the stars.
