The Bristol Gem and Mineral Show: Public Outreach for Geological Sciences Students

Geological Sciences students and faculty hosted a table at the Bristol Gem and Mineral Show. It was a great opportunity for Geological Sciences students to interact with the general public and lots of kids to show how interesting rocks and minerals can be. Led by Dr. Evans, we gave away hundreds of samples of mica, pegmatite, and bags of the three types of rocks. This year, we had a display of interesting rocks from around Connecticut including a siltstone with mudcracks and rain drop impressions, and a large sample of pegmatite from the long-closed Gillette quarry. As usual, we had our  ‘What’s Inside a Rock’ microscope set-up that ‘wowed’ the kids and adults alike. A special thanks goes to all those students who organized and participated in this event, including Aiden Roche, Samantha Appelle, Zoe Prevost, Isaiah Smith, Penny Christy, Liz Spielman, Dan Wojcik, and Andrew Delaney. Even Dr. Oyewumi got into the act by helping distributing samples to the kids. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and are looking forward to the Meriden show in March.
